I’ve always drawn on emotion and real life in much of my writing, especially poetry, I like the surreal quality a poem can take on, the whole process can feel cathartic and also just bring about moments of calm. I’d love to get a typewriter.ĭo you find that CNF comes easy to you as a writer and/or what is challenging about it?įor poets: What is most challenging and most rewarding about using real life in your poetry? When I was younger I had a notebook and used to write more often by hand, but now it tends to be on my phone and editing on a computer. This is often an outpouring of emotion, or fragmented images/dream-like sequences that can begin a poem. I tend to write notes, then if I haven’t got time to write them into a piece, I know they are there for later. I like to read a little or sometimes find listening to music or being outdoors leads to inspiration. ‘Transitions’ is an interesting theme to explore, both within nature and human existence, I thought my poem “Waves” may fit well because it was inspired by my experience of giving birth and becoming a mother, such an emotionally charged life-changing event – each small part of this felt like a transition, and as the last phase of labour is known as transition, it felt perfect for the theme.ĭo you have a routine for writing?
